Education is central to VMMF’s mission.
In our Apprenticeship Program, young emerging artists, chosen through an online audition process, are coached by established musicians who specialize in chamber music on historic instruments. Apprentices have the opportunity to play side by side with faculty members, as well as in their own groups. After an intensive two-week period of study, they have the opportunity to perform on the main stage of the Festival. In the Laureate Program, previous years’ Apprentices return to the Festival to perform with faculty and new Apprentices.
We provide a warm, inclusive atmosphere for emerging artists and audiences alike. Through immersion and example, these talented young musicians are encouraged to find their unique voices, using the dramatic, etched sound of period instruments to bring a fresh perspective to the Classical and Romantic repertoire. The historical instruments demand a more adventurous approach, and our faculty seek to amplify this effect by encouraging free exploration and experimentation.
