CLASSICAL CHAMBER MUSIC

ON PERIOD INSTRUMENTS

Eric Zivian, Music Director

Tanya Tomkins, Artistic Director

Valley of the Moon Music Festival brings the unique sound of Classical and Romantic chamber music on period instruments to audiences in Sonoma and beyond, and expands the horizons of up-and-coming chamber musicians in our Apprenticeship Program.

Our 5th season is a tribute to the extraordinary Salonnières of the 19th Century. These powerful women were the influencers of their day. They brought together great performers, composers, and thinkers, and shaped the musical taste of 19th-century Europe.

APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

A rare opportunity for advanced students to study this repertoire in depth on period instruments, playing alongside and under the direction of some of the world’s experts in historic performance practice.

An international roster of leaders in the field of historical performance who specialize in performance on period instruments. They are on faculties of institutions including Juilliard, the Paris Conservatory, and the San Francisco Conservatory.

2017 FESTIVAL APPRENTICES

Beethoven Violin Sonata No 1 in D Major Opus 12

Now in its fifth year, the Apprentice Program is dedicated to the education and promotion of the emerging generation of chamber musicians by offering them a two-week intensive immersion experience with daily coaching, performance opportunities and collaboration with some of the world’s leading experts in the field.

The TANK Trust Laureate Program, now in its third year, selects four graduates of past summers’ Apprenticeship Programs and challenges them to set their own goals as musicians, entrepreneurs, and cultural ambassadors.

The truest test of an artist’s vision comes when they have finished their musical education and are faced with the responsibility of making their own musical and stylistic choices. As featured performers at the Valley of the Moon Music Festival, the TANK Trust Laureates experiment with their choice of repertoire and interpretation, taking risks that we embrace and encourage at the Festival, as they develop into fully formed creative artists.
