SUMMARY:JOSÉ WHITE’S CIRCLE
DESCRIPTION:José Silvestre de los Dolores White (1835-1918)\, also known as José White and Joseph White\, was born in Matanzas\, Cuba\, during colonial times. His professional debut occurred in 1854 alongside the American pianist Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869)\, who inspired him to study at the Paris Conservatoire. There\, he won the Premier Prix after less than one year of study. White gained global recognition as a soloist\, composer\, and pedagogue and\, in the United States\, he notably became the first soloist of African descent to perform with the New York Philharmonic Society\, during his 1875-1876 tour. Through musical works by White and his contemporaries in Europe and the Americas\, including Gottschalk\, Camille Saint-Saëns\, Cécile Chaminade\, Nicolás Espadero\, Ignacio Cervantes\, and others\, this program will examine the rich—and underexplored—cultural milieu in which White lived and worked.  \n The Festival welcomes Latin Grammy-nominated pianist Adonis Gonzalez in his Valley of the Moon Music Festival debut.  \n  \nPROGRAM \n  \nJosé White – Zamacueca\, Danse Chilienne Op.30 for Violin and Piano (1897) \nIgnacio Cervantes  – 6 Cuban Dances (1899) \nCamille Saint-Saëns  – Piano Quartet in B♭ major\, Op. 41 (1875) \nINTERMISSION \nCécile Chaminade – Piano Trio No.1\, Op.11 (1881) | III. SUMMARY:A POET’S LOVE: Schumann
DESCRIPTION:In the 19th century\, much as today\, a party wasn’t complete without music. Back then\, of course\, it was performed live. The liederabend – or “evening of song” – was a very popular form of social gathering and musical performance. There was food\, drink\, and company\, and the great musicians of the day often sat down at the piano to serenade guests with their most recent songs. This is the environment that gave rise to Schumann’s greatest song-cycle Dichterliebe\, or “A Poet’s Love.” Based on Heinrich Heine’s ephemeral and entrancing cycle of poems\, Dichterliebe offers an inside look at the way an artist confronts the unknowability of love and longing. \nThis year\, VMMF brings Dichterliebe to life with a totally different kind of concert format. Part cabaret\, part salon\, with a bit of houseparty thrown in as well\, this luxurious and exclusive evening recreates all the conviviality of the 19th century liederabend – think food and drink\, but also an up close/personal relationship with the artists themselves. It’s a chance\, yes\, to go back in time\, but also to experience something new\, a surprising way of hearing a beloved classic. \nThe evening  features delicious wine and food from area producers\, as well as a chance to hang out with fellow concert goers and the musicians themselves during this immersive concert-experience. \nFestival Co-Director fortepianist Eric Zivian joins VMMF favorite\, tenor Kyle Stegall\, who says about the evening\, “The moments we will share with listeners in this performance will be truly once-in-a-lifetime\, and will connect all of us to a sound world which will put us squarely in the heart of Schumann and Heine’s soul space.” \n\nApproximately 1 hour without intermission  \nSINGLE TICKETS: \nSingle Ticket Livestream Ticket \n  \nSUBSCRIPTIONS: \nFestival Pass Virtual Pass

SUMMARY:THE PIANO AS ORCHESTRA: Chopin\, Clara and Robert Schumann
DESCRIPTION:With its nearly limitless imaginative possibilities\, the piano is the ultimate chameleon. It can sound like an orchestra\, a voice\, a percussion instrument…you name it! The orchestral qualities of the piano make it the perfect composer’s sandbox. Who better to show us the full range of the piano than virtuoso pianist and composer extraordinaire\, Chopin. Chopin brought the full range of human emotion – and musical sound – to his intimate interpretations. He rarely performed in large spaces\, preferring the convivial and appreciative salons hosted by his musical supporters and patrons.  \nPianist Audrey Vardanega performs a selection of Waltzes and Nocturnes chosen to recreate the ambiance of the 19th century salon and illuminate the wide variety of color and dramatic representation Chopin brought to the instrument. His innovations shaped the way we understand the piano as it exists today. \nTo open the program\, Ravenna Lipchik and Music Director Eric Zivian play Clara Schumann’s achingly beautiful Three Romances for violin and piano. Clara Schumann was another virtuoso pianist\, who toured Europe frequently\, and left Franz Liszt awe-struck when she played for him and performed his works. Finally\, the program ends with one of the most orchestral works by Clara’s husband Robert Schumann\, his Piano Quintet. Robert’s warmth and humanity shine through in this chamber music gem\, heard here as it was originally performed\, on a mid-19th century Viennese piano and gut strings. \nBlattner Series Lecture \nThis 4pm concert is preceded by a free Blattner Series Lecture by Nicholas McGegan at 2:30pm. \nPROGRAM \nClara Schumann\, The Three Romances for Violin and Piano\, Op. 22 (1853) \nFrédéric Chopin\,  Select Nocturnes and Waltzes  \nRobert Schumann\, Piano Quintet in E-flat major\, Op. 44 (1842) \nARTISTS \nKeir GoGwilt\, violin\nRavenna Lipchik\, volin\nCarmen Johnson-Pájaro\, violin\nLiana Bérubé\, viola\nTanya Tomkins\, cello\nAudrey Vardanega\, fortepiano\nEric Zivian\, fortepiano \n\n2:30 Lecture & 4pm Concert \nApproximately 2 hours with intermission \n  \nSINGLE TICKETS: \nSingle Ticket Livestream Ticket \nSUBSCRIPTIONS: \nWeekend I Pass Festival Pass Virtual Pass

SUMMARY:Blattner Lecture Series - Nic McGegan
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, July 16 \n2:3O PM | Nicholas McGegan: EVERY HOME SHOULD HAVE ONE. \nFrom the time of Handel up to the invention of the phonograph\, every family that could afford it aspired to possess a keyboard instrument in their parlour. Owning a harpsichord or piano brought the whole musical world into the living room. The family\, especially the daughters\, could play the latest tunes from the capital and arrangements of arias from the hit operas of the day. One could even hold a ball at home\, playing the same fashionable menuets or waltzes that were danced at court. \nPart of our Blattner series of lectures. Free with purchase of today’s concert ticket.

SUMMARY:THE SYMPHONY AS A TRIO: Mozart & Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:Mozart’s Piano Quartets are written like concertos: the piano is featured\, accompanied by a sort of “mini orchestra” of 3 string players. We are thrilled to feature VMMF friend Audrey Vardanega as the “soloist” with three generations of early music experts in the accompanying roles. True to this year’s theme\, the program ends with an arrangement of Beethoven’s 2nd Symphony for Piano Trio by the composer himself. On an 18th-century fortepiano you can really hear the trumpets and drums!  \nPROGRAM  \nMozart\, Quartet in G minor\, K.478 (1785) \nBeethoven\, Symphony No. 2 in D Major\, Op. 36 (arranged for piano trio)  \nARTISTS \nKeir GoGwilt\, violin\nRavenna Lipchik\, volin\nElizabeth Blumenstock\, viola\nElisabeth Reed\, cello\nTanya Tomkins\, cello\nAudrey Vardanega\, fortepiano\nEric Zivian\, fortepiano \n  \n\nApproximately 2 hours with intermission | Programs and artists subject to change \nSUBSCRIPTIONS \nWeekend I Pass Festival Pass Virtual Pass \nSINGLE TICKETS \nSingle Tickets Livestream Tickets \n
