SUMMARY:THE PIANO AS ORCHESTRA: Chopin\, Clara and Robert Schumann
DESCRIPTION:With its nearly limitless imaginative possibilities\, the piano is the ultimate chameleon. It can sound like an orchestra\, a voice\, a percussion instrument…you name it! The orchestral qualities of the piano make it the perfect composer’s sandbox. Who better to show us the full range of the piano than virtuoso pianist and composer extraordinaire\, Chopin. Chopin brought the full range of human emotion – and musical sound – to his intimate interpretations. He rarely performed in large spaces\, preferring the convivial and appreciative salons hosted by his musical supporters and patrons.  \nPianist Audrey Vardanega performs a selection of Waltzes and Nocturnes chosen to recreate the ambiance of the 19th century salon and illuminate the wide variety of color and dramatic representation Chopin brought to the instrument. His innovations shaped the way we understand the piano as it exists today. \nTo open the program\, Ravenna Lipchik and Music Director Eric Zivian play Clara Schumann’s achingly beautiful Three Romances for violin and piano. Clara Schumann was another virtuoso pianist\, who toured Europe frequently\, and left Franz Liszt awe-struck when she played for him and performed his works. Finally\, the program ends with one of the most orchestral works by Clara’s husband Robert Schumann\, his Piano Quintet. Robert’s warmth and humanity shine through in this chamber music gem\, heard here as it was originally performed\, on a mid-19th century Viennese piano and gut strings. \nBlattner Series Lecture \nThis 4pm concert is preceded by a free Blattner Series Lecture by Nicholas McGegan at 2:30pm. \nPROGRAM \nClara Schumann\, The Three Romances for Violin and Piano\, Op. 22 (1853) \nFrédéric Chopin\,  Select Nocturnes and Waltzes  \nRobert Schumann\, Piano Quintet in E-flat major\, Op. 44 (1842) \nARTISTS \nKeir GoGwilt\, violin\nRavenna Lipchik\, volin\nCarmen Johnson-Pájaro\, violin\nLiana Bérubé\, viola\nTanya Tomkins\, cello\nAudrey Vardanega\, fortepiano\nEric Zivian\, fortepiano \n\n2:30 Lecture & 4pm Concert \nApproximately 2 hours with intermission \n  \nSINGLE TICKETS: \nSingle Ticket Livestream Ticket \nSUBSCRIPTIONS: \nWeekend I Pass Festival Pass Virtual Pass

SUMMARY:THE SYMPHONY AS A TRIO: Mozart & Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:Mozart’s Piano Quartets are written like concertos: the piano is featured\, accompanied by a sort of “mini orchestra” of 3 string players. We are thrilled to feature VMMF friend Audrey Vardanega as the “soloist” with three generations of early music experts in the accompanying roles. True to this year’s theme\, the program ends with an arrangement of Beethoven’s 2nd Symphony for Piano Trio by the composer himself. On an 18th-century fortepiano you can really hear the trumpets and drums!  \nPROGRAM  \nMozart\, Quartet in G minor\, K.478 (1785) \nBeethoven\, Symphony No. 2 in D Major\, Op. 36 (arranged for piano trio)  \nARTISTS \nKeir GoGwilt\, violin\nRavenna Lipchik\, volin\nElizabeth Blumenstock\, viola\nElisabeth Reed\, cello\nTanya Tomkins\, cello\nAudrey Vardanega\, fortepiano\nEric Zivian\, fortepiano \n  \n\nApproximately 2 hours with intermission | Programs and artists subject to change \nSUBSCRIPTIONS \nWeekend I Pass Festival Pass Virtual Pass \nSINGLE TICKETS \nSingle Tickets Livestream Tickets \n

SUMMARY:TRANSFORMATION: Rolla Duets & Beethoven Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Reserve virtual ticket\nFULL FESTIVAL SUBSCRIPTION\n  \nTwo concerts\, livestream and in-person at Hanna Boys Center \nAfter the long period of illness and suffering in 2020-21\, we turn to Beethoven’s masterpiece\, the Heiliger Dankgesang Quartet\, for comfort and inspiration. Written just two years before his death\, after several years of emotional and physical struggle\, Beethoven found himself well enough to compose again and grateful to be alive. He titled the third movement “Heiliger Dankgesang eines Genesenen an die Gottheit\, in der Lydischen Tonart.” This translates as “Song of Thanksgiving to the Deity from a convalescent\, in the Lydian mode.” It is a profound and heartfelt prayer of thanks after his illness. The quartet is preceded by a delicious appetizer of Rolla Duets for violin and viola. \nBettina Mussumeli\, violin\nJodi Levitz\, viola \nApprentice String Quartet:\nKako Miura and Vivian Mayers\, violin\nRamon Carrera-Martinez\, viola\nDrake Driscoll\, cello

SUMMARY:CONNECTING: 2021 Apprentice Performance - Schubert & Weber
DESCRIPTION:Reserve virtual ticket\nFULL FESTIVAL SUBSCRIPTION\n  \nThis year\, with all safety protocols in place\, VMMF was determined to connect in person with all five of our Apprentices. From New Haven\, New York\, and Montreal\, these five extraordinary young musicians come together for the first time in beautiful Sonoma – forming new friendships\, working with new mentors\, and learning a fresh approach to chamber music on historical instruments. In this concert we enjoy the fruits of their labor in Schubert’s Grand Duo for violin and piano\, and in a rarely heard gem by Carl Maria von Weber\, one of the most important pioneers of Romanticism. Both of these pieces were written during the composers’ early 20s\, around the same age as the young performers in this concert. \nKako Miura and Vivian Mayers\, violin\nRamón Carrera-Martínez\, viola\nDrake Driscoll\, cello

SUMMARY:FRIENDSHIP: Clara Schumann Trio\, Fanny Mendelssohn & Louise Farrenc
DESCRIPTION:Reserve virtual ticket FULL FESTIVAL SUBSCRIPTION \nIn this concert VMMF takes a look back at our successful 5th season in Sonoma: The Salonnieres: Women of Power and Influence\, bringing back some the leading women composer/performers of the Romantic era. Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel were very close to their husband and brother\, respectively. Love was at the core of these relationships\, but they were not without competitive strain. Due to the sexism of their time\, these women were prevented from achieving the full success they deserved. This concert brings their original voices to the fore. Like Clara\, French composer Louise Farrenc also enjoyed a career of concertizing as a pianist\, and together with her husband Aristide Farrenc\, started one of France’s most successful publishing houses. \nRachell Ellen Wong\, violin\nTanya Tomkins\, cello\nEric Zivian\, piano
