APPRENTICE EDUCATION

Our program is now tuition-free!

THE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM

JULY 15 – JULY 29, 2018

A key part of the Festival is our Apprenticeship Program, a summer residential program for students and young professionals. It is an intensive exploration of chamber music from the Classical and Romantic era on period instruments through both coachings from and collaborations with some of the world’s leading experts in early music, with an emphasis on performance.

Applications for 2018 are now open. The deadline to apply is March 15, 2018.

We will be accepting 5 Apprentices:

  • 2 violinists
  • 1 violist
  • 1 cellist
  • 1 keyboardist

The Valley of the Moon Music Festival is delighted to be co-sponsoring this unique competition.  Applications due March 15.  See details.

REQUIREMENTS:

You must be an advanced music student (undergraduate level and above) or young professional musician. You must be at least 18 years old, and while there is no upper age limit we envision the Apprentices to be from 18-30 years old. You do not need to have experience on period instruments - although such experience is welcome – but you must be willing to put gut strings on your instrument and tune them to A = 430, or play on the fortepianos to be provided.

THE PROGRAM INCLUDES:

  • Private coaching sessions
  • Each Apprentice will perform in two Apprentice Ensembles
  • Apprentice Ensemble coaching sessions from faculty artists
  • Apprentice Ensemble rehearsals
  • Each Apprentice will be assigned to rehearse and perform alongside faculty musicians in a Festival concert

TUITION:

The Apprenticeship program is tuition-free thanks to our generous sponsors. Housing and some meals are also provided. Each Apprentice is required to take on a few hours of volunteer work during and/or in advance of the Festival (box office work, library, scheduling, etc.).

APPLICATION:

The application includes your biography (1-2 paragraphs), your statement of interest in period instruments and historic performance, and a recording of your playing. We would like a link to your music online, or email us an mp3 file of a roughly 10-minute recording of you playing 2 pieces of Classical and/or Romantic chamber music on period or modern instruments. Two contrasting selections are encouraged. Selections should be chosen so that we can clearly hear the qualities of your own playing as well as how you collaborate with your colleagues.

Apprentices will be notified of their acceptance, as well as their assigned repertoire, by March 30, 2018. Please submit any questions to apprenticeship@valleyofthemoonmusicfestival.org.

Submit your application below. Include your name and instrument in any attachments. There is an application fee of $25, payable online via PayPal. We cannot consider you for admission without receiving the application fee.
